Stonehedge to host Schuylkill County's first Peace Pole dedication April 26
Stonehedge Gardens will host the County’s first Peace Pole dedication on Sunday, April 26 from 2 pm to 6 on the Garden’s Great Lawn. Located at 51 Dairy Road, Tamaqua, this event is free and open to the public.
The dedication is slated to honor Earth Day with a special focus on world peace, the environment, and the arts. Visitors that day may take a guided tour of the seven-acre gardens and enjoy performances that will include folk singer Frankie Alazar, Rumi poetry set to music by Michael London, and readings by poet Lisa DeVuono.
The Peace Pole Project is a project affiliated with the United Nations Department of Public Information since 1990. Peace Poles are often ‘planted’ to commemorate special occasions, such as holidays or festivals, and a Peace Pole Dedication is an internationally-recognized activity designed to bring together people from many sectors of the community. Today, there are more than 200,000 Peace Poles in 180 countries. For more information on the global Peace Pole Project, visit www.worldpeace.org/peacepoles.html.
“Earth Day is perfect for this activity because it’s like Christmas. You need to find the true meaning and capture the spirit; then make it part of your life,” explains Board Secretary Debi Dodson.
“Stonehedge is a great place to be inspired through nature and art, and world peace is a message that everyone can relate to,” she adds.
Similar to other Peace Poles around the world, the Stonehedge pole is an eight-foot-tall, hand-crafted monument that displays the message ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic on each of its four sides. Although Peace Poles may be constructed from any material that is environmentally sound, the pole that will be planted at Stonehedge is made from Western Red Cedar, a wood that is a renewable resource.
Stonehedge Gardens is a seven-acre, free public garden, gallery and gift shop used for art exhibits and education, as well as a variety of community events focused on nature, art and wellness. Visitors are invited to discover the garden at any time between noon and dusk.
Operated as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Stonehedge Gardens is member-supported and run almost completely through volunteer support. Its mission is to provide an environment for personal and community transformation and wellness through its gardens and the arts. For pricing on private tours, to join as a member, or become a volunteer, visit http://stonehedge.org or call 570-386-4618.
